Wow, it’s been a really long time since I last wrote anything…I was looking over my “Things to Blog About” list to get started today, and the first thing that struck me is that it is really, really, REALLY long. The second thing that I noticed is that most of the items on the list are now completely irrelevant. Tiger Woods has been played out to death. It’s already February, so I can’t blog about the new decade.
(By the way, did we ever come up with a way to refer to the 2000′s? “The two thousands” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue the same way that “the nineties” or the “eighties” does. I heard someone refer to them as “The Naughty Aughties”, but I really don’t like that. I demand a better nickname for this upcoming decade.)
Michael Jackson’s deathday is on the list. Aram is on the list. I even have this written down: “I don’t drink beer, but if I did, I’d probably drink the same beer that ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’ drinks. I’d congratulate his marketing team for making the most effective beer commercial I’ve ever watched, but I can’t remember the brand right now.” (What happened to that guy? I liked that guy.)
The point is, it’s been a long time. And I think I can pin it down to the following two causes. Either a) my list has had nothing relevant to write about, or b) I have been too busy to write. Fortunately, today is Valentine’s Day. Thus, a) I theoretically have something to write about, and b) I am most definitely alone free today.
The problem is, I don’t really know much about Valentine’s Day. February was kind of a busy month growing up, since my dad’s birthday, my birthday, and my parents’ wedding anniversary are all in February. I guess my parents just didn’t want another event that could possibly have leftovers. And of course, I went to an all-boys private school as a kid, so I didn’t even know that valentines were supposed to go to girls until the 7th grade. So I don’t really have any thoughts about Valentine’s Day at all, just a bunch of questions.
I think my biggest question about Valentine’s Day is what passes for good “Valentine’s Day” planning. There was a commercial that we were watching the other night for Walgreen’s (wow, two commercial references in one blog post…am I watching more television?), and they were advertising their new “gift planning employees.” Not that I want to disparage the fine folks at Walgreen’s, but even I, the most clueless of people, have doubts about the Walgreen’s Valentine’s Day package. Might as well make a sign that says “Sorry I forgot Valentine’s Day”. At least that would be homemade.
The only way I’ve ever really been involved with Valentine’s Day is with singing valentines. I was a choirboy throughout middle school, high school, and college, so I ended up doing singing valentines for a total of six years. And my biggest question throughout the entire process was: who actually sends these things? I mean, is it really romantic to send a bunch of guys to sing to your significant other? Especially if those guys could be incompetent people like me? I just don’t get it.
I guess the one thing I really do wish I could do on Valentine’s Day is celebrate Black Day. I think I might have celebrated it one year before, but I can’t remember it anymore, so it doesn’t count. And while I don’t know much about Valentine’s Day, I do know that I really like zza zza myun. So if anyone wants to eat zza zza myun, or can answer any of my questions (or both!), please tell me.
